We are working diligently to find financial sponsorship as well as product sponsors. We are pleased to announce that Excalibur Sailing Team has formed a partnership with Kingfisher Yachting Ropes up until the 2016 Paralympic games. They are kindly supplying us with a variety of ropes needed to make the boat perform at the highest level.

Sailability Multiclass Regatta

16 August 2011

Hi all

This weekend Jo, Marcus and I, along with members of my family attended the Sailability Multiclass Regatta at Rutland water. I have always enjoyed this competition and in previous years have done reasonably well.

After the IFDS World Championships held in Weymouth in July we realised that we had a major leak where the keel fits into the boat. We also realise that our keel bulb was severely needing an overhaul and having got several people's opinions we put in a claim with our insurance company for a considerable amount. This was to get the leak stopped as well is a new keel. We would like to thank Noble Marine boat insurance www.noblemarine.co.uk for their prompt approval of our claim.

We only got the boat back from the repairers on Wednesday and without getting the boat back into the water we were unable to test out whether everything worked properly. It was unfortunate that we had an event so close to getting the boat back but we had to trust the repairers that everything was shipshape.

On Saturday morning we all congregated at the pontoon but unfortunately where the repairs have been done now the keel wouldn't drop right down leaving about 18 inches above the deck. There was no way we could sail like this and although Marcus and Peter my brother tried their utmost to get us sailing it was impossible to drop it right down.

Better luck next year!

Our next event is the National Rankers held in Weymouth at the end of September. We will be very keen to show the others SKUD competitors how fast we are without a boat that leaks profusely!

Kind regards

Keith

Progress Report

In the last six weeks we have participated in the Sail for Gold Regatta as well as the IFDS World Championships. At Sail for Gold it was  Jo's first ever regatta so I was talking her round the course and within a few races she was now understanding more about racing. Our goal for sail for gold was not to come last and we managed this. Our coach was incredibly happy with our progression at this event especially as we had only been sailing together for a couple of weeks.

At the start of the IFDS World Championships we were hoping to better our 16th place At Sail for Gold. With an extra four boats at the world Championships we were incredibly excited on the first two days to be running in 16th place out of 21. Unfortunately at this Regatta we were only able to compete in five or six out of the 11 races primarily due to boat breakages as well as bad weather.

Our boat is possibly the oldest on the Paralympic circuit and with this comes problems if they are not kept in check. It was always our intention to completely strip the boat down after the world Championships and after the third day we realised that there are a lot more problems with our boat than we had expected. These are not insurmountable but they will take sometime to rectify.

Jo's brother Marcus has become heavily involved with developing the infrastructure we need for both the boat as well as possibly finding sponsorship and suppliers for equipment on our behalf. He is doing this on a voluntary basis and wants to work with Peter Jones and Wimbleball Sailability  to enable our campaign to move forward. He is also a very accomplished coach.

Looking forward to the rest of the year we are due to go up to Rutland for the access multiclass regatta in the middle of Augustwhich also doubles as the UK SKUD National Championships. After this there are the national rankers in Weymouth at the end of September. We will also be doing several training camps throughout the year..

Jo and I would like to congratulate Alexander Rickam and Nikki Burrell (Great Britain SKUD sailors) for their third IFDS World Championship win in three years!

Sail for Gold Report

15/06/11

Hi all!

Well wasn't that fun but very hard work. Last week Jo and I joined 16 other skuds in Weymouth to race at sail for gold. With over 700 entries in 12 classes the atmosphere was electric.

As we have only been sailing together for six weeks our goal was not to come last and we just about made that . This was also Jo's first ever race event she has participated in and she was amazing.

We started off cautiously on the first day in calm conditions but this was short lived. On the Tuesday the wind and waves had really picked up and we were struggling to control the boat but after one race  the  race officer  decided to cancel the  next one  because the wind had picked up even more. Wednesday racing was cancelled for the Paralympic classes due to the weather being too strong for our rigs. Due to the fact that we didn't race on Wednesday we had to make up Some races on Thursday. The wind was still strong but this was our best day so far picking up a 12th place! On the final day we had another 13th place in the final race even though we were over the line at the start. We had to go back across the line and by my estimates we were approximately 5 to 7 boat lengths behind the next boat. Considering this we had to do something drastic in order to make up this distance so we stayed on one tack almost until the mark and we had made up three or four places by doing this.
Our overall position was 16th out of 17 boats which was quite an achievement considering Jo has only been sailing for six weeks!

We are now booked in to do the IFDS world Championships the week after next in Weymouth with 18 skuds!

Game On!

Last week we tried out a possible crewmember to join Excalibur. Jo Frith was diagnosed with MS in 1992 and was advised to start swimming as a part of her physiotherapy program. She quickly discovered that she enjoyed being in the pool and joined a disabled swimming club. Having the bug for competing she continued to up until 2009 attending the World Masters Games and winning gold medals in 50m, 200m, 400m, 800m freestyle, together with a silver in the 100m.

Jo has now retired from swimming and she was looking for a new sport to sink her teeth into. Today she has been classified and is now a full-time member of our team!

We can now progress with our bid for 2012 and 2016!

"Sailing is an incredible sport for any sailor, but for Keith I believe it brings an even greater sense of freedom. But freedom was not enough for Keith - he began racing, and his passion for that has lead him into an extraordinary journey. Keith is aiming for the top, and what I respect about him is that despite his personal challenges, his focus sits entirely on the 'ability' in disability...

Keith, it was fantastic to meet you.

You're an inspiration to us all - sailors and non-sailors alike!"

“Despite Keith’s obvious challenges in life, he’s one of the most driven people I know – I like that – it kind of reminds me of myself.  He has an obvious talent for sailing and a particular aptitude for racing.  And with the right boat and the right technology to overcome his physical limitations, he will prove that he has the determination and skill to earn the right to compete with the best”.
