Our First Regatta

17/03/11

Okay, let's try this again!  This is the third time I've started this report but I keep getting sidetracked onto other things halfway through it!

Well last weekend we finally got to participate in our first race event in the SKUD.  This was in Weymouth and was  only open  to  UK  sailors.  There was six races over two days with that o one discard.

It was perfect sailing weather on both days with clear skies and winds in the mid-teens.  There were seven teams in the SKUD class with two actual Paralympic teams joining us.

Having done all our training on our own, being around other boats in such close proximity was rather nerve wracking to start with.  This wasn't helped when in the third race we collided with another boat at the start.

Our results from the first day reflect did our lack of experience in the boat but Sundays results were quite different!  My aim was not to come dead last but we ended up coming 5th overall just 1 point behind 4th!

Our results were: 6-5-4-3-2!  Not bad for our first regatta!

Next weekend we are going out to Oxford for our second regatta so I will let you know how we get on!

Ellen MacArthur says:

"Sailing is an incredible sport for any sailor, but for Keith I believe it brings an even greater sense of freedom. But freedom was not enough for Keith - he began racing, and his passion for that has lead him into an extraordinary journey. Keith is aiming for the top, and what I respect about him is that despite his personal challenges, his focus sits entirely on the 'ability' in disability...

Keith, it was fantastic to meet you.

You're an inspiration to us all - sailors and non-sailors alike!"

Geoff  Holt says:

“Despite Keith’s obvious challenges in life, he’s one of the most driven people I know – I like that – it kind of reminds me of myself.  He has an obvious talent for sailing and a particular aptitude for racing.  And with the right boat and the right technology to overcome his physical limitations, he will prove that he has the determination and skill to earn the right to compete with the best”.
